"Yukon baseball team has high hopes even after graduation of hard-throwing stars"

Things are going to be a little bit quieter in Yukon this baseball season. The crowds will have thinned out a bit. Large groups of scouts don’t figure to lug their radar guns to just about every Millers game. And Yukon coach Kevin James’ phone is already ringing less. This is what life after Chad James and Ryan Gibson is like.

Both of the hard-throwing pitchers have graduated. James was a first-round pick by the Florida Marlins and figures to be fast-tracked to the majors. Gibson was drafted as well, going off the board in the 48th round, but as was expected, he decided to play for OU instead.

"It’s definitely different around here now,” Kevin James said. "Things are a bit calmer now.”

And so Yukon can focus on bouncing back from a season that was a disappointment.

State tournament appearances are expected at Yukon. Last season, though, the Millers came up just short, losing in the regional finals.

This season, though, even without Chad James and Gibson in the rotation, the Millers are confident this team can get back to the level they expect.

"Winning state,” Yukon utility player Colby Gathers said was the Millers’ goal. "Anything short of that is not acceptable.”

That’s certainly a lofty goal, but Gathers said the Millers’ lineup is capable.

"We’re a scrappier bunch this year,” he said. "We’ve got some good sticks and can really play some defense. Our pitching isn’t going to be as good, but we do have some strong pitchers and we can make up for that in other ways.”

And there won’t be as much pressure on the Yukon players — individually at least — as there was last year.

"Last year, there were scouts in the crowd every time we played,” Millers leadoff hitter and center fielder Brandon Ruiz said. "And those guys, when they’re watching, aren’t just watching Chad and Ryan. They’re watching everybody. So you definitely press some wanting to impress them.”

Now, though, things are more relaxed without the pressure of performing in front of scouts or the label of being one of the teams to beat.

"I think you can already tell a difference,” Ruiz said. "We’re just more relaxed and more loose now.”

Yukon isn’t expected to fall off this year after losing the players it graduated last year. But the Millers’ talent hasn’t dried up, either. Ruiz is a speedy leadoff hitter who makes things happen at the plate, Gathers does a bit of everything and Gibson’s now-sophomore brother, Kyle, figures to play a significant role on the mound.

"We want to go back to state,” Ruiz said. "It was a disappointment not to make it there last year, and this team is definitely capable.”

"Freshman Ryan Gibson struck out nine batters in his first start as a Sooner and led No. 22 OU to a 9-5 win in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at San Diego State."

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- While Gibson provided the pitching, another newcomer, junior second baseman Danny Black, led the way at the plate with four RBIs and Caleb Bushyhead and Garrett Buechele contributed three hits apiece.

The Sooners built a 8-0 lead after their at-bat in the top of seventh, but the Aztecs rallied with five runs in the bottom half of the frame off freshmen relievers Jack Mayfield and Brandon Bargas.

"We knew they would make a run at us," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "They are a really good team, and the first game is not going to be indicative of what kind of team they are going to be this year."

San Diego State's rally forced the Sooners to give the ball to Ryan Duke, who entered in the eighth inning with the tying run in the on deck circle. Duke struck out two and allowed one hit and a walk in his two innings of work for his second save in as many nights. With two saves already this season, Duke has 18 in his career and moved into sole possession of second place on OU's all-time saves list.

"We probably wont have him for tomorrow now but that's okay," added Golloway. "He's done his work this weekend and we have to make sure we protect him."

In games one and two, OU rallied for victory but finally staked an early lead in the third game of the series. But just like game one of Saturday's doubleheader, which OU won 17-5, the Sooners used the sixth inning to build a large advantage.

OU plated four runs in the sixth inning on Saturday night with four base knocks, all extra base hits, led by Tyler Ogle's two-run double to right center field. Danny Black contributed a RBI triple, his only base hit of the game despite having a game-high four RBIs.

Black's sacrifice bunt in the second inning put the Sooners on top 1-0. OU plated a run in the third and another in the fourth with RBI groundouts from Ross Hubbard and Black.

While the Sooners' offense tacked on single runs in three straight innings, Gibson retired the side with three strikeouts in the first and also retired seven straight from the end of the second frame through end of the fourth, five via strikeout.

"I thought Ryan Gibson, making his debut as a freshman, had a terrific start for us," added Golloway. "His pitch count was up after five innings and he had to come out."

Gibson's stellar performance helped SDSU keep San Diego State scoreless for 10 1/3 innings dating back to the sixth inning of game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The Sooners trailed 5-1 heading into the sixth inning, but then exploded for 24 runs over the next 10 1/3 frames into Saturday night's contest.

After the Aztecs tacked on five runs in the bottom of the seventh, senior catcher Bryan Groth extended the lead back to five runs. Groth's home run, the second of his career, was the Sooners' fifth of the season.

The last time OU started a season on the road and won its first three games was in 1989. During that campaign, which ended 44-19, the Sooners recorded wins against New Orleans, Tulane and LSU.
